Apple is preparing to release iOS 26.3, with signs pointing to a public rollout later this month. Based on recent developer and public beta builds, the update focuses on improving messaging features, privacy, and cross platform compatibility between iPhone and Android devices.
According to references found in iOS 26.3 beta files, Apple is laying the groundwork for end to end encryption in RCS messages. This would allow encrypted messaging between iPhones and Android phones, something currently limited to iMessage only. The feature depends on support for RCS Universal Profile 3.0, a standard released by the GSMA in March 2025.
Carrier bundle data shows encryption support appearing first in France. The feature has been spotted in network files linked to Bouygues, Orange, SFR, and Free. This suggests Apple may roll out encrypted RCS messaging in stages, depending on carrier readiness.
Beyond encryption, iOS 26.3 also prepares support for advanced messaging tools already common in iMessage. These include message editing, unsend options, inline replies, and full Tapback reactions for RCS chats. If enabled, these features would significantly narrow the gap between iPhone and Android messaging.
Apple has not confirmed when encrypted RCS messaging will fully activate. While iOS 26.3 is expected to reach users around January 26, some features may remain inactive until carriers enable them. Similar delays have occurred in past iOS releases where backend support was required.
The timing matters as pressure grows from regulators and users to improve cross platform communication. Apple previously confirmed it is working with industry partners, including Google, to ensure a consistent RCS experience across platforms.
If delivered as expected, iOS 26.3 would mark Apple’s most significant step yet toward secure messaging beyond iMessage. However, final feature availability will depend on carrier rollout and regional support.
