Android 17 Brings Major Notification and Quick Settings Changes as Google Fixes UI

Android 17 notification and Quick Settings UI update on an Android phone

Google is preparing a major interface update with Android 17, aiming to fix long standing complaints about notifications and Quick Settings. Leaks from internal builds show a redesigned layout that separates notifications from system controls and restores faster access to network controls. Android 17 is expected to launch in June 2026, starting with Pixel devices.

Android 17 will introduce a split notification layout. Swiping down from the left side of the screen will open notifications, while swiping from the right will open Quick Settings. Pixel phone users are expected to choose between the classic combined view and the new split layout through system settings. Foldables and tablets will be forced to use the split layout on larger screens, with the combined view limited to smaller outer displays.

Android 17 will also reverse one of Google’s most criticized design decisions by restoring separate Wi Fi and mobile data toggles. Google merged both into a single Internet toggle in Android 12, adding extra steps for basic network control. Internal Android 17 builds show one tap Wi Fi and mobile data toggles that load faster and improve everyday usability.

Notifications and Quick Settings are among the most used parts of Android. Android 17 focuses on usability, improving speed and reducing friction across phones, foldables, and tablets. Developer previews are expected soon, with Google able to adjust features before final release.
