Microsoft has confirmed it is developing a new Xbox console, revealing the codename Project Helix and signaling the next phase of its gaming hardware strategy.
The announcement came from Microsoft’s new gaming chief Asha Sharma, who said the upcoming device will lead in performance and support both Xbox and PC games. The statement confirms earlier speculation that Microsoft is preparing a system that bridges the gap between console and PC gaming.
Although the company did not reveal technical specifications, the confirmation marks the first official signal that a successor to the Xbox Series X and Series S is already in development. Sharma said more details about the console will be discussed with developers and partners during the upcoming Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
The ability to play both Xbox and PC games suggests Microsoft is moving toward a more unified gaming ecosystem. Instead of a traditional closed console platform, the next generation Xbox could function more like a hybrid system connected to Microsoft’s wider Windows gaming infrastructure.
Such a shift would fit with the company’s Play Anywhere approach, which allows certain titles purchased through the Xbox ecosystem to run across multiple devices including console, PC and cloud platforms. Expanding that model could give players access to a much larger game library.
The announcement also arrives during a turbulent period for the Xbox division. Microsoft’s gaming leadership recently changed after longtime Xbox leader Phil Spencer retired and Xbox president Sarah Bond stepped down. Sharma, who previously led Microsoft’s CoreAI initiatives, has since taken over the division.
Xbox has faced pressure in recent years as the company experimented with releasing some of its first party titles on competing platforms such as PlayStation and Nintendo. The strategy generated new revenue but also raised concerns among longtime fans about the future of Xbox hardware.
Financial results have also shown mixed performance for the gaming unit. Microsoft recently reported a drop in gaming revenue and a sharper decline in hardware sales following a quieter release schedule over the past year.
Despite those challenges, Microsoft continues to invest heavily in gaming. The company’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023 expanded its portfolio of major franchises, while Game Pass remains a central pillar of its strategy.
For now, Project Helix remains largely mysterious. Microsoft has not revealed a release date, price, or design details. However, the confirmation makes clear that a new generation of Xbox hardware is on the horizon, with a stronger focus on performance and broader compatibility across the Xbox and PC ecosystems.
