iPhone 5s iOS Update in 2026
Apple has released a rare software update for the iPhone 5s, extending support more than 12 years after the device first launched. The update arrives alongside a wider batch of iOS releases rolled out on January 26, 2026.
The new update, iOS 12.5.8, is available for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6. According to Apple’s release notes, the update extends critical system certificates required for iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation. Without this extension, these services would have stopped working after January 2027.
The update also applies to a small group of other older Apple devices, including
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPad Air
- iPad mini 2
- iPad mini 3
- iPod touch sixth generation.
These devices cannot upgrade to newer versions of iOS but still rely on Apple’s core online services.
Apple says the update ensures essential features remain functional on older hardware. The iPhone 5s launched in September 2013, while the iPhone 6 followed in 2014, making this one of the longest software support timelines Apple has ever offered.
The iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 last received updates in January 2023, when Apple issued security fixes. This release focuses on long term service continuity rather than new features.
Alongside iOS 12.5.8, Apple also released iOS 26.2.1 and maintenance updates for iOS 18, iOS 16, and iOS 15, covering both active and legacy devices. Apple has not shared detailed security notes for these updates.
Based on buyer feedback and long term user reports, Apple often extends limited support for older devices beyond its official policy when core services are at risk.
