Google Expands Gemini AI Across Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive

Google has announced a major update that expands the role of its Gemini AI assistant across Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive. The new capabilities aim to help users create documents, spreadsheets and presentations faster without leaving the apps they already use.

The update introduces new tools that can generate first drafts, build spreadsheets and create slides using information from Gmail, Chat, Drive and the web. These features are designed to turn Google Workspace apps into more active assistants instead of simple productivity tools.

One of the biggest changes appears in Google Docs. A new Help me create feature lets users describe the document they want, after which Gemini generates a full draft using relevant information from files, emails and chats. Users can then refine sections of the document without rewriting the entire draft.

Docs also gains tools to improve collaboration. A Match writing style feature can align tone across text written by multiple people. Another tool called Match format can copy the structure of another document and apply it automatically to a new one.

Google Sheets is also getting deeper AI integration. Gemini can now generate entire spreadsheets from a prompt. It can also organize information into tables, categorize data and pull missing details from the web using a Fill with Gemini feature.

Google Slides is receiving similar AI upgrades. Users can ask Gemini to generate a fully editable slide that matches the design of an existing presentation. Google says it is also developing a feature that will eventually allow users to generate complete presentations from a single prompt.

Google Drive is being redesigned to act more like a knowledge hub. When users search for files using natural language, Gemini now shows an AI Overview that summarizes relevant documents. A new Ask Gemini feature allows users to ask questions across files, emails, calendars and other data stored in their account.

The new Gemini capabilities are rolling out in beta starting this week. They will initially be available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. Docs, Sheets and Slides features are launching globally in English, while the new AI tools in Drive are currently limited to the United States.
