Android 17 Leak Reveals Blur Across System Menus
Google is preparing a noticeable visual shift in Android 17, with internal builds revealing wider use of blur across the system interface. The changes appear focused on design depth rather than new features.
According to leaked internal screenshots, Android 17 replaces solid panels with translucent backgrounds in key system areas. The volume slider, power menu, and parts of Quick Settings now allow wallpapers and app content to remain visible behind UI elements.
The blur effect builds on Google’s Material 3 Expressive update first introduced in Android 16. At the time, Google said subtle background blur helped users stay aware of what was happening behind menus while reducing visual distraction.
Android 17 expands this approach. Internal builds show blur applied more consistently across system controls, including screen recording menus and floating UI panels. The effect adapts to Dynamic Color themes and remains more restrained than Apple’s Liquid Glass design in iOS.
Google has also added a system option to reduce or disable blur for users who prefer clearer visuals or want to save battery. The company has not confirmed whether third party apps will adopt the same design language.
Android 17 is expected to debut later this year, with Pixel devices likely receiving the update first.
