Google Gmail Changes Put Millions of Legacy Email Accounts at Risk

Gmail app update warning users about security changes in 2026

Google Gmail Ends POP3 and Gmailify Support for Older Email Account

Google has begun rolling out backend changes to Gmail that could affect millions of users who rely on older email setups. The updates focus on cleaning up legacy features, but security experts warn many users may be exposed without realizing it.

According to Google, Gmail will no longer support POP3 email fetching for third party accounts starting January 2026. This feature allowed users to pull emails from older inboxes directly into Gmail. Many of these accounts are long standing and still actively used.

At the same time, Google is also ending support for Gmailify. Based on reports from Android Authority and 9to5Google, Gmailify previously allowed Gmail spam protection and inbox tools to work with Yahoo, AOL, and Outlook addresses. Once removed, those accounts will lose Gmail’s built in spam and phishing filters.

Google says Gmail blocks millions of spam messages every minute using AI based systems. Security analysts warn losing this protection could increase the risk of phishing and malware, especially for users who do not switch to native Gmail addresses.

These changes are already rolling out and may go unnoticed by most users. Experts advise checking account settings and updating email setups before legacy protections stop working.

These Gmail changes come at a time when massive credential leaks, including a recent 149 million user data exposure, have already put global account security under pressure.
